Since the presentation of the Schuman Declaration on 9 May 1950, the European Union has grown to become a symbol of strength and unity. To celebrate everything we have achieved in this time, this ‘Europe Day’ the Commission invited the general public to pay us a visit and enjoy a day of activities, learning and family fun right in the heart of Brussels.
The Berlaymont – one of the Commission’s most iconic buildings – opened its doors on Saturday 4 May from 10:00–18:00.
- What did visitors find?
Once inside, the public was invited to explore various ‘villages’, the history of the EU, our values, and the achievements of the European Commission. This was just the start, however, as the Open Day was also an opportunity to look behind the scenes and find out how we collectively built a strong, diverse, democratic and digital EU that stands by its people, and is committed to building a greener future and a resilient economy.
There were plenty of games and activities for all ages, artistic performances and food tastings, as well as opportunities to meet members of our team. Visitors were also invited to take a peek at the 13th floor meeting room where President von der Leyen and the College of Commissioners make decisions for the benefit of citizens. From there, they could admire a magnificent view of the city.
For EU citizens preparing to vote in the upcoming European elections, information was also provided to ensure people could make the most of their vote.
Some visitors also took the time to visit the Experience Europe exhibition centre. The immersive, family-friendly exhibition remains open and is free of charge, shining a light on the history and values that have shaped the EU’s past and present, and continue to shape its future.
